Jane Gerrish | Drawing
Born in Sydney in 1958, Jane studied design at ESTC before beginning a career in fashion and textiles. She also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Design at UTS. In the last ten years Jane has extended her skills in painting and drawing, training alongside a number of respected teachers and artists, including Juliet Holmes à Court, Celia Gullett and Jennifer KeelerMilne. In 2015, Jane worked as a teaching assistant in a 6-day summer drawing course with renowned teacher and 9 times Dobell Prize for Drawing finalist, Jennifer Keeler-Milne. She was also Artist in Residence, for ‘Dare to Draw’ in 2017. Additionally she assisted Juliet Holmes à Court at a 3-day painting workshop at Bundanon, NSW in 2016. Characterised by expertly detailed and tonal drawings, Jane’s art practice is grounded in her passion for research. Each of her drawing series is the product of curiosity and enquiry as she experiments with form, light and shadow to push the boundaries of her subject and medium. Seeking to instil in the viewer the wonderment of her discoveries, the artist’s atmospheric work often reveals a dreamy or mysterious mood reflecting her love of illumination and creating a meditative stillness. Jane’s work has been exhibited at the Mils Gallery, Surry Hills and since 2016 group shows at 220 Creative Space, Woolloomooloo; ESD Gallery, Darlinghurst; Collab Gallery, Chippendale and Gallery East, Clovelly. In 2016, she also had her first solo show at Gallery East. She lives and works in Sydney with her husband and their teenage son and spends every spare moment thinking about, researching and making art.
