Pinus radiata is both loved and hated by people in rural areas.  It is seen as a great wind break, but also a fire hazard.   This cone comes from a pine tree on my property, and it expands its scales on the cone – breathing and waiting for the rain.  This happens in response to the change in air pressure.  In the natural world, the Black Cockatoos have learnt this, and now rely on it as a food source, their native food sources often destroyed by development.  In their feasting on the seeds, the Black Cockatoos create wonderful sculptural forms.  This pine is over 100 years old.  It was planted alongside what was the original road along the valley where my property is located.   The spread of this pine is huge and over the years it has provided food to the Black Cockatoos in the area.  It is one of a number of pines now nearing the end of their lives.

The title for this work comes from the poem "The Waiting Life" by well known Australian poet, Dorothea Mackellar.
