Canberra based artist Lucy Palmer and Sydney based artist Debbey Watson present an exhibition of new works in glass and clay respectively. Both artists are well known for using geometric forms and surface treatments to convey ideas around connectivity, relationship and space.
Working from her studio at the Canberra Glassworks, Lucy strives to utilise the unique qualities of kiln formed glass to create an illusory sense of distance and depth; depicting vast landscapes, expansive skies and the quiet horizon where the two dissolve.
Her inspiration derives from an interest in the potential of distance and space to draw the viewer away from their immediate physical environment and allow the mind to escape.
Informed by her background in graphic design and an interest in modern architecture, Debbey’s ceramic sculptures feature slab-built geometric forms. A limited palette of three different unglazed clays emphasises the simplicity and minimal aesthetic of each form. With each work containing multiple elements, Debbey’s interest is in the changing dynamics when elements are rearranged. Further connections are made using delicate inlayed lines, threading one form to the next.
