Sharon Field | Only this and nothing more

19 June – 25 July, 2021

Title of works have been inspired by the poem, “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe

Our connections with nature in all its forms reinforce our close bond with the plants, animals and insects around us. We have only one planet, and we need to remember that the natural world is only this and nothing more.

Our planet’s environmental clock is ticking. It is not going to slow down, nor will it stop. This exhibition questions how well life around us will survive with the impact of global warming and the actions of people more generally. The paradox we face is that we often experience rebirth and a lyricism after long anxious seasons of drought, fire and floods when we see the insects, birds, plants and fungi return, glowing with new life.

However, life can be cut short so quickly. One moment, we see small, beautiful birds singing loudly and flying round their nesting areas. Crash. Silence. Life stopped in a heartbeat. Other extinctions can be much more subtle and harder to see, especially where insects are concerned. This exhibition provides cameos of the small things of beauty that are strong when their environment is healthy and in so doing, provides us with a mirror to what we may lose.

The works engage with one of the most pressing issues of our time. The clock is ticking.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 19 May 2021. All welcome. An informal Covid safe reception will be held 3-5pm with the artist present. The exhibition will run until 25 July 2021. All artworks will remain as part of the exhibition until then.
