There is never a dull moment inside the formidable mind of Susie Dureau. Here she shares a bit about her state of mind during time in the studio.
S&HG // When you’re making, what are you thinking about?
There's no subject off limits. Sometimes I wonder, 'How does the mind create when we sleep?' or 'Are any of the water molecules in this cup the same that rained down on my ancestors in Quebec in the 16thC?' However, more often it's something like, 'Did I feed the dog this morning?'
S&HG // Is it all technical or are you able to let your mind wander?
It's an interesting question. I think the technical operations are subtle thoughts, more like muscle memory, but sometimes I do need to remove myself from any distractions in order to resolve something. I often listen to a metronome beat. This is a meditation technique I learned as a teenager, it mimics the brain frequency of the alpha state and helps me to concentrate because my mind loves to wander.
S&HG // Have you ever had makers block?
It's always there in a way. It keeps me wanting to resolve the problems of the artwork. Without the challenge, I'm not sure I'd remain engaged.
S&HG // How do you overcome it?
When a block reaches crisis pitch, I have to walk away. I often find that if I come back to a painting the next day, the creative pathway is immediately obvious and I can't believe I didn't see it before. Knowing how and when to do this is one of the most satisfying pleasures of having long experience in the studio.
S&HG // Overall, is your art practice meditation or migraine?
Both. Creating is nuanced and multifaceted and yet, it's all so simple at the same time... See?
