Meditation or Migraine Part 7 | Tim Snowdon

Meditation or Migraine Part 7 | Tim Snowdon

S&HG// When you’re making, what are you thinking about? Is it all technical or are you able to let your mind wander?

My practice presently involves assemblage of objects derived from an initial idea then rendering them into a painting. Realising this is done through sketches and finally, paint. All the while I smoke, drink coffee and listen to music. Initially it’s a struggle with torpor or a myriad of petty distractions until suddenly hours have past, I’ve done little or a lot and the day is now evening. I realise I have spent 6 hours hunched over an easel with little mental recall at all, so it must be meditative. And an initial struggle with inertia and general failure to launch.

S&HG// Have you ever had makers block? How do you overcome it?

Yes I normally have painters block when other commitments constrain studio time- like finally getting two studio hours to do something which then can be two fruitless hours. I need time. I’ve tried snapping my fingers to no avail, but I do find, if desperate, that some rudimentary sketching helps. Otherwise I smoke, play a little guitar, drink coffee etc.

S&HG// Overall, is your art practice meditation or migraine?

For me it must be meditative but it gets real passionate when things (paint) aren’t behaving.
